Chapels
Chapels and church in See
An interesting excursion to the church and the chapels in the holiday resort village See awaits you during your holiday in Tyrol. Here is a just a foretaste.
- Kirche See – Hl. Sebastian (Saint Sebastian church in See)
Around 1445 the presence of a chapel on the site of the present-day church was officially documented for the first time. The present church dates to the middle of the 18th century and was adapted a number of times over the last 200 years. Here you will find interesting frescos by Johann Josef Wörle from Imst dating from 1761, a high altar and two side altars, decorated with figures by the Imst sculptor Franz Xaver Renn (around 1820), and a more than life-size statue of Mary with Jesus by Josef Georg Witwer (1760) in the centre niche of the left side altar. - Lourdeskapelle (Lourdes chapel)
The original Lourdeskappelle, a charming and unpretentious wooden structure, was situated at the edge of the forest, at the hamlet Schusterhaus in See. In 1976, the chapel was restored by the "Seaber" (young farmers) youth group. Following the impact of a rock fall in 1992, the chapel was replaced by a protective wall. In the meantime, it has been rebuilt – integrated in the wall. - Kapelle Oberhaus (Oberhaus chapel)
Oberhaus is a small hamlet in See, comprising only a farm and a chapel. Inside the chapel there is a Madonna statue, around 250 years old, by the sculptor Johann Ladner, who also created the three life-size wooden figures of the Kerkerkapelle (Kerker chapel) in Kappl. - Kapelle Habigen (Habigen chapel)
The chapel in Habigen was built in 1882. It houses a splendid picture of the Virgin Mary, donated by See's greatest son, the artist Mathias Schmid. It was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Saint John of Nepomuk and houses a small altar based on a drawing by Friedrich Maurer of Innsbruck. It remains to this day the only chapel in See in which the Blessed Sacrament is kept.
You can reach the chapels of See via well marked routes. In winter you can also make a snow shoe trek through the romantic landscape; in summer your hiking trails will usually bring you to the chapels in any event.
